Considered as a festival of brother and sister, Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is around the corner. This Indian festival is celebrated to embark love between brothers and sisters. In this festival, sisters tie a sacred thread to the brother’s wrist, asking for protection from him throughout life. Perhaps, this is the reason, that this festival is called “Raksha Bandhan”, meaning a bond of protection. Sisters pray for their brother’s health and wealth. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the Shravana, as per the Hindu calendar in India. This festival is considered as one of the most beautiful tradition in India that stands for the bond of love between brothers and sisters since their childhood. As far as the origin of Raksha Bandhan is considered, it started ages ago. As per a legend, in 326 B.C., when Alexander invaded India, his wide tied a Rakhi to King Porus’s wrist and in return, Porus promised her and her husband’s protection. Another legend says that, Raksha Bandhan was first celebrated in Marwar, when Queen Karnavati of Chittor, sent a Rakhi to the Mughal Emperor, Humayun and asked him to save her kingdom from being invaded by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat.

Recipe for Khoya Burfi
Khoya Burfi is one of the most popular sweets of India and many sisters usually buy them for their brothers on the occasion of Raksha Bandha. However, with the increasing contamination of food in the market, it would be better if a sister cooks it herself. Ingredients
1 litre milk
75 gm sugar
50 grams coconut powder
20 grams chopped pistachios
20 grams chopped almonds
Method
- First of all, take a boiler and boil the milk on sim heat for about 45 minutes or 1 hour until it becomes a thick paste.
- Keep on stirring while heating the milk and add in between sugar and coconut powder. Continue stirring till the sugar dissolves completely.
- Now, take a thali and grease it with butter or ghee and then pour the reduced milk batter.
- Garnish it with almonds and pistachios and then leave it aside for cooling and afterwards cut it into square pieces.
